Jersey number 18 isn’t one of the most popular jersey numbers in the game. This doesn’t mean it hasn’t had great names that have worn it or are currently wearing it. One thing that is common about it is that it is worn across the board. From defenders to midfielders and attackers. So the list will cut across the board.
Paul Scholes- In the history of Manchester United and the history of soccer players with number 18, Paul Scholes will rank highly on both sides. He was a monster in the middle of the park playing for Manchester United.
He was part of the famous class of ’92 at Manchester United and was a key figure in the team that won the Champions League in 1999 and 2008. Scholes continue to wear the jersey all through his stint at the club but got another number when he returned for his second spell before finally retiring from the game.
Ashley Young- Young inherited the number 18 jersey from Paul Scholes and have personified it to his to date. When soccer players with number 18 are mentioned, Young will also be up there because he has continuously worn the jersey since Scholes and hasn’t changed for a smaller number like others do.
While wearing this jersey, he is part of the squad that got to Champions League final in 2011 and won two league titles with United since joining. He is currently the captain of United and was given a contract extension at the club. Young might not have the legs like in the past but he has served the club well and deserve some plaudit.
Nacho Monreal- Ever reliable ever-dependable Nacho Monreal is a key figure in the Arsenal dressing room. He is also one of the longest-serving members of the team. Monreal is seen as a very reliable defender based on his versatility of positions. He can play as a full back and also as a central back which makes him fit in well into the three at the back formation used by the manager in some games.
He is in the last few years of his career but Monreal has given his quota to the Arsenal team that he was invited to the Spanish national team after years of a snub. Anyone that eventually takes over the number 18 jersey from him will know that a great play once used the number.
Jordi Alba- Arguably the best left-back in Laliga for years and he has shown his quality constantly and consistently. After he rejoined Barcelona from Valencia in 2012, Alba started wearing the number 18 ever since and has trademarked it at Camp Nou. This is why when players with number 18 jersey are called, he can confidently raise his hand.
Olivier Giroud- One player that is not highly rated by many fans but has paid his dues to be where he is Olivier Giroud. The former Arsenal striker joined Chelsea and got the number 18 jersey.
He hasn’t scored so many goals for the club but he opened the scoring in the final of the Europa League against his former club. This alone has put him on a podium to be called amongst the biggest soccer players with number 18.
