Some jersey numbers are very uncommon but unique. These are the jersey numbers that are double-figure and beyond 20 always hardly get used but whenever used is highly regarded. This is the situation with jersey number 22.
Soccer players’ with number 22 are always unique when they wear them. At some club however, the number is assigned to a goalkeeper, preferably, the second choice goalkeeper. It depends on these players likeness for the number.
One thing that is known about soccer players with jersey number 22 is that they stand out whenever they are on the pitch with their jersey. We will consider some of the biggest names to don the jersey number.
Isco– Isco joined Real Madrid in 2013 from Malaga and has become a big name in the squad. He enjoys the jersey number 22 as it makes him standout and don’t have to start fighting anyone for a jersey number or anyone joining the club and wanting your jersey like the common numbers 1-11.
Isco was a key member of the Real Madrid squad that have won four Champions league titles in the last six seasons starting in two of those finals. He has however lost his place in the first team lately and could be on his way out of Real Madrid. One thing is sure, wherever he goes, he will still don the number 22 jersey.
Sergio Romero– Most soccer players with number 22 in the Premier League are goalkeepers. They are second choice for their squad but have a key role in the sustainability of the squad as they make good squad players.
A good example is Romero. The Argentine has been the second choice for Manchester United where he wears the 22 jersey since Louis Van Gaal days and was the first choice for the 20016/17 Europa League games for United as they went ahead to win the trophy. It was a great moment in his career and for the club as that was what propelled them to the Champions League the next season.
Simon Mignolet– When Mignolet joined Liverpool from Sunderland in 2013, he got the number 22 jersey and has kept wearing the jersey ever since even when he was first choice goalkeeper then.
Now that he seats on the bench for Allison, the keeps his number and remains a backup option for the Reds. He started on a very good start at Liverpool by keeping a clean sheet on his debut and stopping a penalty but things have dwindled over time.
Arturo Vidal– When Vidal moved to Barcelona from Bayern Munich, it was one of the unexpected moves but it happened to be a decent deal. So when he got the jersey number 22, it wasn’t a surprise. He became one of the soccer players with jersey number 22 as he was formerly wearing 23 at Bayern but Samuel Umtiti already has that number.
